At Alabama’s pristine gulf coast, there are plenty of family-friendly activities perfect for children of all ages. Besides the typical water fun such as paddling, parasailing, boating, and the obvious – sand and sun – there are so many more ways to keep the crew entertained. Whether you have a large clan or small, the opportunities are endless for cheap or free fun. Here are the top 4 best budget-friendly places to have a blast at the beach with the family this summer.

1. Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge

FREE

Bon Secour in French means “safe harbor”, which is an appropriate name for a place so gorgeous and peaceful. Ideal for nature enthusiasts, the Wildlife Refuge is a 7,000 acre sanctuary of serenity in an area with high levels of tourism traffic. One Google reviewer said, “I wish there were more places like the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge,” and another described the location as having “no shortage of beautiful views”. This well-kept haven has several types of wildlife, multiple walking paths, and is considered to be a “birder’s paradise.”

2. Gulf Coast Zoo

$9 - $11 per person (children 2 and under FREE)

Even though the powdery beaches and glittering saltwater is the main event in the Gulf Shores area, the Gulf Coast Zoo is a fascinating alternative. With a wide array of exotic animals, it has been dubbed “The Little Zoo that Could” by Animal Planet. The zoo is a staple attraction in the Gulf Shores community, with over 500 exotic animals including lions, tigers, various primates, wolves, reptiles and many more. While you’re there, you simply must try the kangaroo encounter for an opportunity to hold and cuddle a little joey.

3. Fort Morgan

$4 - $7 per person (children 5 and under FREE)

For a history lesson made epic by the thrill of the ocean, the breathtaking Fort Morgan is the place to go. The Fort Morgan State Historic Site is truly an interesting stop for the whole family. “We brought our kids (8 & 10) here on a quiet Monday morning. We honestly didn't expect them to be excited about it as they really aren't into history yet. We were wrong! They loved exploring all of the hidden rooms and halls,” one TripAdviser reviewer noted. An added bonus:  they are dog-friendly.

4. Gulf Shores Museum

FREE

For a break from the sun and heat, or if the weather turns rainy, the Gulf Shores Museum is a beautiful choice for indoor entertainment. The house was built before WWII, and the facilities are both fascinating and lovely. On the property is a butterfly garden that will intrigue and excite kids and adults alike. The museum also offers special programs throughout the year, so give them a call to see what unique event may interest you.
